Building a Stonewall: Installation

Beginning

To layout the wall’s curve and define the digging area for the trench or foundation, we’re going to use a household extension cord as our marker.

Digging Trench

After laying out the marker extension cord, it’s time to dig out the trench. Remove off any grass, and set the dirt of the trench aside for later use. If your wall is prolonged, a backhoe or tiller rental can be a true cost-saving investment.

Stuffing Down Gravel

The trench is the solid foundation on which a wall is to be built, so make sure that you put the gravel into the trench accurately and really tamp down until it is compacted and level. To tamp down as solidly, you will need to use a tamper.

Placing and Leveling Stones

Place the stones to touch side by side; they should be fairly trimmed as they’re laid down. Level each stone as it’s put in. Use the gravel to help level the stones. Finish the first course of stones.

Sawing Odd Stones

It may be necessary to cut some of the stones. The wet saw is the perfect tool to rent when building a wall. It cuts the stones pretty easily. Just mark your stone at the desired size and cut. Otherwise, if you’re going to be cutting only a few stones, that can be done with a hammer and mason’s chisel as well.

Putting in Drainage

As soon as the stone installation is all set, get ready to install the wall’s drainage. The first step is to add gravel to the source of the first run of stones. Put the gravel into the trench and tamp it down lightly—lay PVC drain pipe on top of the gravel. Once the drainpipe is in place, cover it with more gravel.

Tapping Down Stones

Dispense an even layer of mortar to the prepared base for the wall. When you apply the first run of stones, tap them down to get them set into the mortar. Use a leveler to make sure this first run is level, front to back and side to side.

Applying Mortar Evenly

The basic to building a wall using mortar is when you apply the mortar, it needs to go evenly onto the run of stones that are set. After spreading the mortar, before laying the next stone, use the trowel edge to cut the mortar even with the wall face.

Using a Trowel

Try leveling the mortar’s width that was laid down on top of the previous row to maintain an even and clean feel. Thoroughly you should be checking for level, both vertically and horizontally. Upon completing the wall and the mortar is set but not hard, tool the mortar for a clean look.

Placing Capstones and Adding Landscaping

Place the capstones onto the adhesive material, and then pick them back up and replace them again. This makes the adhesive to spread evenly on the stones. The finishing touches of this project are to add some landscaping. The preferences of plants and other vegetation depend on customers and really come down to personal choice. The principal factors are the amount of light the area gets along with the climate.

Costs

A stone wall construction costs $4,850 on average, with a typical range between $2,260 and $7,750. Stone walls cost $26 to $80 per square foot depending on thickness and style. These walls have several uses outside the home. Natural Stone walls excellently can add a decorative and warm touch to a lawn or garden and increase the space’s functionality.
